Before the COVID-19 lockdown started, I made a trip to the craft store to stock up on things like stickers, colouring books, craft supplies…basically anything that I thought would help entertain our cuddly pint-sized dictator at home. Did I say dictator? I meant toddler 😉
Peanut went through her stickers way too quickly. And I found myself discovering stickers (or ‘see-cos‘ as Peanut likes to call them) in the most unexpected places – they somehow always ended up on my clothes and Marc’s socks! This is not surprising considering Peanut loves placing the stickers on each of her fingertips instead of on paper. This gave me an idea to create some finger puppets out of simple craft materials.
It was very quick to make and Peanut was delighted at the sight of her new toys.
- Pipe cleaners (Chenille stems)
- Pom poms
- Googly eyes
- Hot glue gun
Step 1: Wrap the chenille stem around a small cylinder object similar to your child’s finger size. I have tiny fingers and my pinky worked out great!
Step 2: Twist the top half of the chenille stem into ears, you can be creative!
Step 3: Using a glue gun, glue a pom pom onto the chenille stem
Step 4: Glue on the googly eyes
I had fun coming up with different funky designs by varying the size of the pom poms and googly eyes. I made five in total because I know Peanut doesn’t like one of her fingers to feel left out lol. I ended up creating a few alien monsters, a rabbit, a cat and a koala.
Peanut loved shaking them for the googly eyes to rattle, and as predicted, she had to have them all at the same time 🙂
Hope this inspired you to create some funky finger puppets for your little one to enjoy. I’m always looking for new craft ideas, so feel free to leave a comment below and share your favourite DIY.
Thanks for reading and happy creating!
